Hobas Lodge & Campsite

Overview

Hobas sits about 10 km from the main Fish River Canyon viewpoint and is where the five-day hiking trail is registered and started, which makes it the most practical base for anyone wanting the canyon at sunrise or sunset without a long pre-dawn drive. The recently rebuilt Bush Chalets are simple, air-conditioned two-bed units with en-suite bathrooms and verandas facing the plains, and the campsite is one of the better NWR sites in the south — shaded stands, braai places, clean ablutions and a small pool that is very welcome in the heat. There is a shop and fuel at the gate, but no full restaurant, so most guests self-cater or eat light. Days are spent driving the rim to Hikers' Viewpoint and the main lookout, walking the short rim paths, and running down to Ai-Ais for the hot springs. Quiver trees, wild horses at Aus and the Kokerboom forest near Keetmanshoop are all within a comfortable day's drive.
