Overview
Ai-Ais sits in a deep bowl of rock at the southern end of the Fish River Canyon, on the Namibian side of the /Ai-/Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. Sulphurous water surfaces here at around 60°C and is piped into indoor thermal baths and an outdoor pool complex shaded by palms — the reason the resort exists, and the reason the five-day Fish River Hiking Trail is routed to finish on its doorstep between May and September. Accommodation ranges from twin Mountain View and River View rooms to four-bed family chalets and a large riverside campsite under old camel-thorn trees. There is a restaurant, bar, shop and fuel, and the canyon's Hobas viewpoints are around 70 km north on gravel. Summer here is genuinely hot — the resort traditionally closes over the hottest weeks — so most travellers come between April and September, combining the hot springs with the canyon rim, Kokerboom forests and the road north towards Aus and Luderitz.
