    Overview

The Highlands reinvents the traditional safari experience in northern Tanzania. Located on the forested slopes of the Olmoti Crater, its eight domed suites offer a high-altitude retreat with a distinct sense of privacy and striking contemporary design. The camp’s unique position provides broad views over the surrounding landscape and a base for exploring beyond the main crater floor, while still being just an hour's drive from the primary descent road. While game drives in the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater are a key part of any stay, The Highlands encourages a wider appreciation of the area. Guests can embark on guided hikes, including a climb to the summit of Olmoti for impressive views or a descent into Empakaai Crater to see the vast flocks of flamingos on its soda lake. There are also opportunities for thoughtfully-managed cultural visits with the local Maasai community, offering an insight into the traditional life of the region’s people. These varied activities, combined with the unique accommodation, create a more rounded and exclusive Ngorongoro experience.

    More about The Highlands

    The stay

The experience at The Highlands is defined by its dramatic architecture and elevated location. A stay here feels removed and private, offering a different pace to lodges on the main crater rim. The camp's design is modern and memorable, with a central library and dining area providing warm, communal spaces to relax. Evenings are often cool at this altitude, and the wood-burning stoves in each suite create a particularly cosy atmosphere after a day of exploration. While a base for superb wildlife viewing, the camp is also a destination in its own right, inviting guests to simply enjoy the views, the quiet of the forest, and the unique design of the property itself. A small spa facility is also available for treatments.

    The location

The camp is situated at one of the highest points in the region, on the edge of a forest that lines the slopes of the Olmoti Crater. This position within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, affords expansive views across grassy plains and distant volcanic peaks. It is a private location away from the more crowded crater rim, yet the descent road into the Ngorongoro Crater is only an hour away by vehicle. This allows for classic game drives to see lion, elephant, and black rhino. The location is also ideal for exploring other, lesser-visited parts of the conservation area, such as the nearby Empakaai Crater, known for its alkaline lake and resident flamingos. The closest airstrip is Lake Manyara, a three-hour drive away.

    Where you'll sleep

Accommodation is in one of eight uniquely constructed suites. These canvas-and-perspex domes are spacious and thoughtfully designed, with large windows offering views of the surrounding hills. Each suite contains an en-suite bathroom with hot running water and a shower, and a wood-burning stove which staff will light on cooler evenings. The interiors are comfortable and stylish, creating a warm retreat after a day outdoors. For families, an interconnected suite is available, while the honeymoon suite offers extra privacy and includes an outdoor hot tub. The design provides a constant connection to the wild landscape while ensuring complete comfort and security.

    Eating and drinking

Rates are on a full-board basis, covering all meals and house drinks. The camp’s chefs prepare fresh and wholesome dishes, often served communally in the main dining area, which features a central fireplace and looks out across the landscape. The menu is varied, making use of fresh produce suited to the camp's remote location. House drinks, including a selection of wines, beers, and spirits, are included in the nightly rate, though premium wines and champagne are available at an additional cost. For days spent on longer excursions, such as a full-day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, the camp can provide a picnic lunch to be enjoyed out in the bush.

    Who it suits

The Highlands is well suited to active travellers who appreciate innovative design and wish to explore Ngorongoro beyond a single game drive. Its mix of hiking, wildlife viewing, and cultural experiences appeals to those seeking a more varied and in-depth safari. The romantic and stylish suites, particularly the honeymoon dome with its hot tub, make it an excellent choice for couples. Families with older children (five years and up) are also welcome, with a dedicated family suite and activities like crater hikes suitable for those over 12. It is ideal for guests who value a sense of privacy and a unique setting over immediate proximity to the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

The dry season from June to September offers excellent wildlife viewing but can be busy. The shoulder seasons provide a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer visitors. The main rains fall from March to May, which can make some roads muddy but brings lush, green landscapes.
