Torra Bay Campsite
Overview
Torra Bay is a fishing camp in the truest sense: a cluster of pitches on gravel and sand where the northern dunes of the Namib meet the Atlantic, open only in December and January when Namibian families migrate to the coast for the angling season. Facilities are basic and that is the point — ablutions, water, a small shop, fuel and a kiosk during the season, with everything else brought in. The shore fishing is superb, the fog is constant, the wind is real, and the drive north to Terrace Bay or east through Springbokwasser towards Damaraland is one of the emptiest in Africa. Roughly 30 km inland the Uniab River delta cuts through the gravel plains and holds springbok, oryx and the occasional desert lion track. Permits for the Skeleton Coast Park must be arranged in advance and gate times are strictly enforced.
