Overview
Hardap Resort stands on a bluff above the Hardap Dam, the biggest body of freshwater in Namibia, roughly 25 km north of Mariental and directly off the B1 between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop. The view from the pool terrace and restaurant runs out over open water — an unexpected sight in this part of the country — and the dam is popular for angling, with barbel, carp and kurper the usual catch. The surrounding Hardap Game Park holds oryx, kudu, springbok, mountain zebra and a large pelican and cormorant population, and can be driven in an ordinary sedan. Accommodation includes VIP and Family Chalets, twin Bush Chalets, a ten-bed dormitory popular with groups and school parties, and a large campsite with braai facilities. Bush Chalet rates rise in the July to October high season; everything else holds steady, which makes Hardap one of the cheapest comfortable overnight stops on the southern route.
