Gross Barmen
Overview
Gross Barmen is the closest hot-spring resort to Windhoek — around 100 km north via Okahandja — and has been a Namibian weekend institution for generations. Water rises at about 65°C and is cooled into an indoor thermal hall and a large outdoor pool, set among lawns, palms and reed beds on the Swakop River. It makes an easy first or last night on a Namibian self-drive: tarred road all the way, a restaurant and bar, and enough space for children to run. Accommodation runs from twin Bush Chalets to Premier Chalets, four-bed family units, self-catering Acacia and Aloe houses and a shaded campsite. Birders do well here — the riverine bush and reeds hold hundreds of species — and the old Rhenish mission church at Gross Barmen, one of the oldest in the country, is a short walk away. Rates hold steady year-round, which makes it good value in the July to October peak.
