More about Ai Aiba Rock Painting Lodge

    The stay

Ai Aiba Rock Painting Lodge is a simple lodge immersed in ancient rock art. It features deeply thatched roofs and large windows that manage temperature extremes. The main area is a large thatched building housing the reception, lounge, bar, and restaurant. Guests can relax by the palm-shaded swimming pool or settle in the lush gardens. Activities focus on the dramatic landscapes, rock art, and hiking opportunities within the Erongo Conservancy. Guests explore on foot, with or without a guide. Sundowner hikes are offered, climbing the rocky hillside behind camp for views over the landscape. Other activities include cultural excursions, 4WD safaris, birdwatching, guided walking safaris, and private activities. The lodge welcomes children of any age.

    Where you'll sleep

Accommodation is provided in 20 en-suite rooms, configured in pairs within ten thatched chalets. These rooms feature high thatched roofs and individual verandas. High roofs and small windows help keep rooms cool during Namibia's hotter months, but also contribute to a slightly darker interior. Each room has air conditioning, twin beds, a tea and coffee station, a small honesty fridge with refreshments, and a lounge area with armchairs and a coffee table. The en-suite shower rooms include a luggage storage area and an electronic safe for valuables. The veranda outside offers chairs and a coffee table for relaxation.

    Eating and drinking

Meals at Ai Aiba Lodge consist of home-cooked food. Breakfast is a spread of cereals, toast, pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cold meats, and cheeses, brought to the table. Hot items such as bacon, eggs, and sausages are cooked to order. Fruit juices, tea, and coffee are available. Lunch choices include salads, toasted sandwiches, and burgers, served à la carte. Dinner is a set menu, with individual tables available in indoor and outdoor dining locations. Meals begin with freshly baked bread accompanied by flavoured butters and a feta and olive salad. Main courses feature a beef fillet steak with pepper sauce, roasted seasonal vegetables, and rice. Alternative mains include pork loin chop or a roasted vegetable dish. Desserts include pannacotta topped with honeycomb. A litre of filtered water is provided in the rooms, and a water refill station is available in the main area. Most dietary requirements are catered for with advanced notice.

    The location

Ai Aiba Lodge is situated in the Erongo Mountains, approximately 45 kilometres west of Omaruru in the Erongo Region of Namibia. Its location is part of the Central Highlands and it is accessible via self-drive, just off the D2315. The lodge is nestled at the foot of a granite kopje, offering views of the surrounding Erongo Mountains. The area contains a high concentration of Bushman rock art, with over 200 recorded sites, some dating back over 2,000 years. The region's terrain includes rolling hills and rugged landscapes, suitable for hiking. The lodge is positioned between Etosha and Windhoek, within reach of Windhoek airport for most afternoon departures. Its setting in a less-visited area of Namibia provides access to significant examples of rock art.

    Who it suits

This lodge suits travellers interested in walking, landscapes, and rock art, rather than those primarily focused on wildlife viewing. Guests engage in self-guided walking trails or guided hikes, including sundowner hikes to enjoy views over the surrounding landscape. The location is excellent for a break from vehicle travel to stretch legs on a hike, with or without a guide. Those with an interest in culture visit a local San living museum to learn about the traditions of the San people. The lodge offers a simple stay between Etosha and Windhoek, providing opportunities to explore the Erongo Mountains. Ai Aiba Lodge accommodates children of all ages, providing a camping cot and high chair upon request. It is generally recommended for slightly older children as there is not a lot to entertain young children.
