Amava River Lodge

Overview

Set on a sweeping bend of the Olifants River in the far north of the Balule Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger, Amava River Lodge (previously known as Bundox River Lodge) is an intimate tented camp offering breathtaking upstream and downstream views from its elevated southern bank. The wide river is scattered with sandbars and reeds that attract abundant birdlife; tall grasses feed herds of elephant and buffalo while deeper pools shelter hippos and crocodiles. Towering riparian trees shade the camp and provide cover for leopards and the elusive Pel's fishing owl. Just five private safari tents — three twin, two queen — are tucked under the canopy, raised on wooden walkways to limit impact on the sensitive riverbank. Each tent has a spacious river-facing deck, en-suite bathroom with shower, flushing toilet, hot and cold running water, standing fans for ventilation, a tea and coffee station and a comfortable workspace. Guests share two communal lounges and a pool, and enjoy 5,000 hectares of exclusive wilderness with eight kilometres of the Olifants River to explore. Note: following recent flooding, Amava River Lodge is temporarily closed while restoration takes place. Reopening is planned for December 2026.
