A Perfect Garden Route 10 Day Itinerary

South Africa’s Garden Route is more than just a road; it’s a tapestry of experiences woven along 300 kilometres of coastline. Here, ancient forests dip their toes into the Indian Ocean, lagoons shimmer in hues of turquoise, and charming towns offer a warm welcome. Crafting the perfect garden route 10 day itinerary allows you to savour this journey, not just rush through it. It’s an immersion into one of the country’s most celebrated landscapes, a drive that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
At Safari Stays, we believe travel should be deep, not wide. This guide is designed to help you connect with the rhythm of the Garden Route, balancing iconic sights with moments of quiet discovery. So, secure your vehicle, pack your sense of adventure, and let’s begin.

Planning Your Garden Route Adventure
While you can drive the route in a few days, a ten-day trip provides a comfortable pace to truly explore. The journey traditionally runs between Mossel Bay in the west and Storms River in the east, but we recommend beginning just before, in the Overberg region, to ease into the journey. This itinerary travels west to east, culminating near the world-class game reserves of the Eastern Cape.
Car rental is essential for freedom and flexibility. Book in advance, especially during the peak season (December to February). For whale watching, plan your trip between June and November. The temperate climate makes the Garden Route a wonderful year-round destination, with each season offering its own unique charm.
Our Expert Garden Route 10 Day Itinerary
Day 1 & 2: The Overberg Gateway
Your journey begins not on the Garden Route itself, but on its beautiful doorstep. From Cape Town, drive east into the Overberg, a region of rolling farmlands and dramatic coastline. Your destination is De Hoop Nature Reserve, a World Heritage Site renowned for its stark, breathtaking dunes and some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet.
Spend your first two days exploring this coastal wilderness, hiking the trails, and watching Southern Right Whales calve in the protected bay (in season). Overnight in or near the historic town of Swellendam, one of South Africa’s oldest settlements, where Cape Dutch architecture lines leafy streets.
Day 3: Mossel Bay to Wilderness
Today, you officially join the Garden Route. Drive to Mossel Bay, a town of significant history where Bartolomeu Dias first landed in 1488. While here, you can visit the Dias Museum Complex and the Cape St. Blaize lighthouse for panoramic views.
Leaving Mossel Bay, the landscape begins to transform. The arid fynbos gives way to the lushness that gives the route its name. Your stop for the night is Wilderness, a place defined by its serene lagoon and the meandering Touw River. Settle into your accommodation and consider a gentle late-afternoon canoe trip on the dark, tannin-stained waters, where kingfishers dart between the reeds.
Day 4: The Lakes and Views of Wilderness
Wilderness is best explored slowly. Dedicate the day to its natural wonders. A visit to the Ebb & Flow Rest Camp in Wilderness National Park is a must. Here, you can hire a canoe or follow the boardwalk trails that crisscross the river. For a truly spectacular vista, drive up to the ‘Map of Africa’ viewpoint, where the Kaaimans River has carved a perfect outline of the continent into the landscape. If your travels fall on a Saturday, the Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market in neighbouring Sedgefield is an unmissable feast of local produce and crafts.

Day 5 & 6: The Lagoon Life of Knysna
Knysna is the undisputed heart of the Garden Route. Cradled around a vast, beautiful lagoon and guarded from the sea by two sandstone sentinels known as The Heads, its setting is simply magnificent. A two-night stay is essential to appreciate all it offers.
Spend your time here exploring the vibrant waterfront, indulging in the town’s famous oysters, and taking a ferry across the lagoon. A trip to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, located on the Western Head, provides fascinating insight into the region's history and ecology, combined with spectacular views. Knysna is a hub of activity and relaxation, perfectly blending nature with sophisticated comfort.
- Knysna Must-Dos:*
- Hike the trail to the viewpoint on the Eastern Head.
- Take a sunset cruise on the Knysna Lagoon.
- Browse the independent shops and galleries at Thesen Islands.
- Enjoy fresh oysters and sparkling wine at the Knysna Waterfront.
Day 7 & 8: Plettenberg Bay’s Golden Shores
Just a short, scenic drive from Knysna lies Plettenberg Bay, or ‘Plett’ as it’s affectionately known. Where Knysna is about the lagoon, Plett is all about its glorious golden beaches and the dramatic Robberg Peninsula. Stay for two nights to soak in the coastal glamour and natural splendour. One of our favourite lodges, The Plettenberg Hotel, offers unparalleled views over the bay.
The absolute highlight is hiking in the Robberg Nature Reserve. The circular trail takes you along the peninsula’s spine, past seal colonies and through fascinating geology, with views that will stop you in your tracks. For wildlife lovers, the nearby Birds of Eden and Monkeyland sanctuaries offer unique, ethical encounters.
Day 9: The Ancient Forests of Tsitsikamma
Prepare for the most dramatic landscapes of your trip. Tsitsikamma National Park is where the Garden Route’s ‘garden’ truly comes alive. This is a realm of ancient trees, deep river gorges, and a rugged coastline pounded by the Indian Ocean. The name means ‘place of much water’ in the Khoisan language, and it’s easy to see why.
Walk through the forest to the iconic suspension bridge over the Storms River Mouth, a thrilling passage that sways gently above the churning, cola-coloured water below. For the more adventurous, kayaking or lilo trips up the gorge offer a unique perspective from the water’s surface. This is the grand, natural finale of the coastal drive.

Day 10: Departure and Onward Adventures
The final leg of the journey takes you from Tsitsikamma to the city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), where you can drop off your rental car and catch a flight onward. This marks the end of your coastal exploration.
However, this is also the perfect gateway to the malaria-free safari region of the Eastern Cape. If time permits, we highly recommend extending your trip with a safari in Addo Elephant National Park, just an hour’s drive from Gqeberha, to complete your South African adventure with a Big Five experience.
This expertly paced garden route 10 day itinerary ensures you capture the essence of one of the world's great road trips. It balances driving with immersive experiences, allowing you to discover the magic that lies between each iconic stop. From the mountains to the sea, it's a journey through the very best of the stunning Western Cape.
