Etendeka Mountain Camp

Etendeka Mountain Camp offers a simple and comfortable safari experience in Namibia's ancient lava highlands. Established over 30 years ago and owner-run by its founder, Dennis Liebenberg, the camp is designed to harmonise with its pristine natural surroundings. It focuses on untamed landscapes, solitude, and authentic experiences rather than large game sightings. The camp prioritises environmental impact, utilising solar power and cooking meals over an open fire. Waste management practices include taking refuse to a local town and providing organic material to communal farms. Etendeka Mountain Camp holds a 5-flower award from Eco Awards Namibia for its commitment to environmental protection.

The main area of the camp is open-fronted, featuring gabion walls constructed from local stone. It includes a lounge with a library of nature books and a telescope for stargazing. A long dining table serves as a central gathering point for guests. A small swimming pool, enclosed by stone gabion walls, offers a place to cool off and sunbathe, typically open from after lunch until afternoon tea. The camp has limited mobile phone reception, but Wi-Fi is available in the main area. There are no plug sockets in the tents, but a charging station is provided in the main area. Laundry services are not available due to water scarcity.

Accommodation at Etendeka Mountain Camp consists of ten walk-in tented rooms, each set up under a canvas roof. These rooms offer a rustic yet comfortable feel. Inside each tent, guests will find twin beds, a small table, a table lamp, two luggage racks, and a metal clothes rail.

Adjacent to each tent, but not en-suite, is a private bathroom open to the sky. This partially enclosed space is defined by a distinctive curved wall made of local stone and bricks, featuring a large circular cut-out that frames views of the surroundings. Within this private area, there is a washbasin with hot and cold running water, a bucket shower, and a flush toilet. Electric lights are also provided in the bathroom area.

Etendeka Mountain Camp provides full board and activities. Meals focus on wholesome, home-prepared food. Breakfast is a self-service continental buffet, offering breads, cereals, a fruit bowl, yoghurts, cold meats, and cheeses, alongside tea, freshly brewed coffee, and fruit juice.

Lunch is served after the morning activity, typically around midday. It is a buffet featuring salads, freshly baked bread, and a selection of cold meats and cheeses. Dinner, a two-course meal, is often cooked over a campfire, offering dishes such as beef goulash and hearty beef pie, followed by desserts like apple crumble and coconut pudding. Afternoon tea is also provided.

The dining area, with its terracotta walls and large photographic prints, includes a bar tucked into a corner. Meals are served at a long table with camping chairs, where guests congregate. A small snack is provided for walkers during morning activities. All drinks available at Etendeka are at an extra cost.

Etendeka Mountain Camp is situated in a 500km² private reserve within the foothills of the Grootberg massif, in Damaraland, Kunene Region, Namibia. The camp lies amidst the ancient Etendeka lava flows of northern Damaraland, an area characterised by basalt rock slowly eroded over millennia, resulting in scattered boulders and dramatic flat-topped mountains.

The camp's remote location requires guests arriving by self-drive to leave their vehicles at Palmwag Lodge. From there, the Etendeka team provides a transfer to the camp, which is conducted as a nature drive, meaning the duration varies depending on wildlife sightings. The landscape can transform significantly after rainfall, becoming a lush green expanse with wildflowers and bushman grass. The camp is open all year round.

Activities primarily involve guided walks, nature drives, and sundowner drives, with a strong emphasis on walking given the area's geological interest. The camp's knowledgeable guides provide insights into the local environment, geology, ecology, and wildlife. Children aged 10 years and upwards are recommended, particularly those keen on exploration and capable of managing longer walks. The camp is not fenced, and wildlife may pass through, requiring supervision for children. It is also suitable for those who prefer communal dining and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
