Eningu Kalahari Lodge

Eningu Kalahari Lodge is nestled in the camelthorn savannah of the Kalahari, offering an opportunity to relax and experience the landscape of Namibia. The lodge features painted buildings constructed from hand-crafted clay bricks, topped with deep thatch roofs. Inside, cool concrete surfaces are complemented by cushions, and breezes filter through gauze windows. Extra blankets and hot-water bottles are provided for cooler nights. Carved wooden statues are found on verandas, while hand-painted porcupines adorn bedroom floors, and quirky hanging tripods hold tea and coffee facilities. Eningu Kalahari Lodge is purposefully small and intimate. A refreshing pool and a small hot tub are available for guests. Archery, volleyball, and badminton are also offered on site. Books, board games, and binoculars are provided for guest use. The lodge places an emphasis on the environment, with waste and water recycling.

Accommodation at Eningu Kalahari Lodge comprises nine rooms, each featuring an en-suite bathroom and a separate entrance. The rooms are designed with a terracotta and red theme, reflecting the Kalahari sand. Most rooms are set in pairs within low buildings with heavy thatched roofs. Some share a thatched porch equipped with a wooden table and chairs. Inside, the rooms are spacious, with moulded-stone bed frames and seating topped with cushions and coloured fabrics. Beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. A built-in bench can serve as a bed for a small child. Each room includes a ceiling fan for warmer periods and an electric wall heater for colder nights. En-suite bathrooms feature a hot shower, washbasin, and flushing toilet, with maroon tiles continuing the lodge's colour theme. Fixtures incorporate old or recycled elements, such as pipes used for towel rails and tin-can surrounds for mirrors. A small, triangular table, suspended between three branches, functions as a tea and coffee station in the bedroom. The stand-alone family room is larger and offers more privacy, including a small fridge, indoor and outdoor seating, and hammocks beneath a large camelthorn tree in a private garden area.

Guests at Eningu Kalahari Lodge can choose between different lounge and dining areas. The main building houses a small lounge and an adjacent library area, alongside an intimate restaurant. A wine-rack, supported by a triangle of natural branches, serves as the bar. During winter months, a crackling fire is lit. An open-air rooftop terrace provides a popular spot for sundowners. Outside, a shaded veranda, known as a "stoep," features walls adorned with an artistic collection of photographs. In the summer, dining can take place in the partially sunken thatched "lapa," which has open sides and is built around rocks, helping to keep it cool. A climate-controlled underground cellar houses a selection of wines, predominantly from South Africa. Fresh, often home-grown ingredients are used in the dining experience. A small bird hide and waterhole are present, where kitchen scraps are left to attract local porcupines after dark.

One of these is a botanical hiking trail, leading through different vegetation zones with explanatory information boards.
